Overview
The course introduces Building Information Modeling (BIM), Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), digital twins, and BIM automation as emerging technologies in construction management. Offered through the University of Florida Honors Program, the course provides students with a foundation in digital construction workflows, from BIM modeling and cloud-based collaboration to connected building information and automated processes.
Students begin with BIM fundamentals and Revit modeling, developing architectural and mechanical models and learning how building information is created and organized. The course then introduces reality capture, 3D visualization, and 4D construction simulation using technologies such as Twinmotion and CMBuilder.
The course next explores digital twins and facilities management, including digital twin concepts, maturity levels, and Autodesk Tandem. Students are introduced to Python, the Revit API, pyRevit, and AI-assisted coding, developing custom tools to automate BIM workflows. The course also introduces the Revit MCP Plugin for AI-assisted tool orchestration.
Through lectures, workshops, demonstrations, quizzes, hands-on assignments, and a collaborative research-based project, students apply these technologies to construction management problems and develop practical skills in BIM modeling, digital workflows, automation, and connected building information.
Course Objectives

- Explore interoperability and the movement of building information between digital platforms.
- Use reality capture, visualization, and 4D simulation technologies to represent and communicate construction processes.
- Understand digital twins, their maturity levels, and their applications to facilities management.
- Develop foundational Python programming and BIM automation skills using the Revit API.
- Use pyRevit and AI-assisted coding to develop custom tools for BIM workflows.
- Explore MCP-based AI tool orchestration for interaction with BIM software.
- Examine foundational applications of machine learning and advanced analytics in construction.
- Collaborate on a research-based project addressing an advanced construction technology problem.
